Sakrete Play Sand - Close, Dry

Sakrete Natural Play Sand is one of those Home Depot staples found outdoors, in the nursery and landscaping section. What is it like? Is it right for children’s sandboxes or for building purposes?

Best Answer

Sakrete Play Sand is a rocky, coarse gray sand that comes in 50 pound bags. It is marginally fine for children to play in and inappropriate for building.

I am not usually motivated to write up a review of sand, but this Home Depot staple had me scratching my head after I purchased several hundreds pounds of it. If you envision children playing in a fine, light-colored beach-like sand, Sakrete Natural Play Sand is not your product. It is a very heavy, coarse sand, more like finely crushed gravel than the fine sand found at Pensacola or Waikiki. Some particles are as large as 1/8-inch in diameter, with the majority being about 1/16-inch in diameter.

Coarse sand does have its merits, though: it’s cleaner. When you run you hand through the sand, your hand comes up clean. Sakrete states in a blog post, “All of our sands are all natural we do not have a man made sand.”
